Not for use with the SendMail task!

Hey, someone finally told those Marketing folks that there's something other than coffee mugs and polo shirts! But I wasn't expecting...US postage stamps! Sure enough, now you can mail your bill payments with a SQL Server 2008 stamp... Click the Microsoft link at this URL.  You'll notice that YOU can create your own stamps too...only $17.99 for a sheet of 20 - $0.42 first class stamps, and the price goes down if you order more than 1 sheet. I'm using my widely-recognized artistic talents to... Upgrading Custom Components for SQL Server 2008 Integration Services

The SQL Server 2008 Books Online page in which we describe the steps for upgrading and redistributing custom components is now live: Upgrading Custom Objects for SQL Server 2008 Integration Services This topic is for shops that wrote a custom component for SQL Server 2005 Integration Services, and who now want to provide a new version of the same component for SQL Server 2008 Integration Services. If you choose to create a new version of your component for 2008, then in addition to recompiling against th... [More]

Adding a VSTA Script task programmatically (revised)

[UPDATED WITH A BETTER CODE SAMPLE FOR THE 2ND SCENARIO TUE 6/10/08] The move in SQL Server 2008 Integration Services from VSA to VSTA for scripting doesn't just give us C# and a better IDE and Add Reference dialog. It has also made programmatic manipulation of the Script task easier and more supportable. This week I got some sample code from Evgeny Koblov, one of our SSIS testers recently hired from Russia. His English is remarkably good...and makes me ashamed that I'm still confused by the Cyrillic a... [More]

Expanded "Feature Selection" page in the SQL Server 2008 Setup Wizard

Just when I thought that I was finally finished with our Setup-related topics! Those wily Setup folks added items to the "Feature Selection" page in the SQL Server 2008 Setup Wizard since I last installed a Katmai build. A couple items need our attention: Client Tools Backward Compatibilty does not install the DTS runtime support. (Please see this post.) Client Tools SDK lays down on disk the managed assemblies needed for Integration Services programming. Otherwise, these assemblies are installed only in th... [More]

My Variable doesn't like my Object any more - FIXED!

THIS LIMITATION HAS BEEN FIXED AND REMOVED FOR SQL SERVER 2008 RTM. Object of any type can now be passed through package variables of type Object, and consumed within Script task code. No, wait. Maybe it's "My Object doesn't like my Variable." Anyway, we just had to remove one of the Integration Services package samples ("SmoTablesDBCC") for Katmai because of this issue that affects the Script task. There are many Types that you will no longer be able to pass into a Script task by way of a package Vari... [More]

SSIS features by edition in SQL Server 2008 "Katmai"

There are no big surprises in the breakdown of Integration Services features by edition for SQL Server 2008 "Katmai". A couple of notes... The Import and Export Wizard is now included with SQL Server Express. The new Data Profiling Task and Data Profiling Viewer are included in Standard edition. The new connectivity components for SAP BW, Oracle, and Teradata (which will be released as Web downloads after RTM on the Feature Pack page) will work only with Enterprise/Developer/Evaluation editi... Expressionable data flow component properties in Katmai

To supplement the current version of the list that's here in BOL, here are some additions or corrections to the list of custom properties of data flow components whose values can be set by using an expression in SQL Server 2008 "Katmai": ADO Source (formerly DataReader Source) SqlCommand TableOrViewName ADO Destination BatchSize CommandTimeout TableOrViewName Lookup Transformation SqlCommand (the SELECT statement that you optionally enter on the Connection page) SqlCom... DTS support in SQL Server 2008 "Katmai"

[REVISED WITH ADDITIONAL INFORMATION SAT 5/24/08, MON 5/27/08, MON 10/13/08] It may seem ironic to start a new blog by talking about old stuff. But we all loved DTS in our youth, and it’s been a popular subject in my Inbox lately. Run-time support for DTS The good news for DTS users is that DTS receives the same degree of support in SQL Server 2008 “Katmai” as in SQL Server 2005 “Yukon”. The bad news is that it’s less convenient (in Katmai) to install that support. Run-t... [More]
